Naturist pensioner says council is breaching his human rights

A pensioner who likes to do his gardening naked has claimed a council is breaching his human rights - by granting permission for three homes to be built overlooking the, er, bottom of his lawn.
Leslie Howard, 70, thinks potential new neighbours will be able to see him as he bares all.
And, after arranging his hedges so he is always out of sight even when trimming his privets in the buff, he insists he is willing to be arrested to protect his way of life.
The retired firefighter, a naturist for 50 years, has been told the occupants of the planned houses may call the police if they become offended by the view from their second-floor windows in Steeton, near Keighley, West Yorks.
But single Leslie said: "The 18-metre garden was the reason I bought the semi 17 years ago.
"Since then, I've spent thousands on fencing and hedging so my neighbours couldn't be offended. Now, I've been told by a Bradford Council officer that I could be charged with indecency if people complain."

Nudism in public is generally legal if it does not cause harassment, alarm or distress to others.
So Leslie added: "After all this time without upsetting anyone round here, I'm willing to be arrested and let a magistrate decide.
"While I'd never walk down the street with nothing on, I'm entitled to my privacy and beliefs." He believes the planners are ignoring sections of the Human Rights Act - including respect for private life, freedom of thought and being able to enjoy property without unnecessary interference.
But council casework manager Ian Wilson said: "The application for housing next to Mr Howard's property will see homes built 30 metres from his boundary - so it was considered there'd be no loss of privacy within habitable rooms.
"We are confident this complies with the Human Rights Act."

Nudist club privacy threatened by tower block plan A luxury nudist club with 300 members say their "paradise" is at risk after their local council approved plans for a tower block overlooking the grounds.

The White House Club in Whyteleafe, Surrey, boats that its members can swim in the nude in its 50ft outdoor swimming pool, relax in its sauna, or play tennis on its two outdoor courts.

Naturists can also enjoy nude ping pong, basketball, badminton and bowls and take part in a range of events, including barbecues and sing-songs in the confines of the five acre club.

But their privacy may be threatened after the local council announced plans to knock down a disused office block just 300 yards away and replace it with a five-storey block of flats.

Nudists are "furious" with Tandridge District Council for proposing the 167-flat tower block, saying residents will be able to see them in the 'altogether' as they prance around in the buff.

The club, which opened in 1933, has a membership ranging in age from two to 90 and counts nurses, teachers, electricians and an airline pilot in its ranks and had 10 bedrooms for residents to stay in.

David Mason, director of the White House Club said today: "This proposal gives us grave concern.

"As it is, members playing tennis or in front of our main building can be seen from the office block, especially when the screening trees' foliage is down.

"We want to see measures put in which preclude overlooking, and protect our environment, which has been a haven of tranquillity and recreation for more than 70 years."

One naturist, a mother-of-two called Wendy, said she loved visiting the club with her kids.

She said: "This is a lovely, relaxed place where the children and I can come and enjoy its privacy.

"I would be concerned if an overlooking building attracted undesirable elements."

Another nudist, who did not want to be named, said she would 'not feel comfortable' being overlooked by so many people.

Th 26-year-old secretary said: "I certainly would not feel comfortable with people watching me swimming, sunbathing or playing tennis in the nude.

"Not that I'm ashamed of my body, but I don't want any Tom, Dick or Harry staring at me from their windows."

She added: "We are going to fight these plans, because we have been here so long and it would affect the way we live our lives."

The club's website states that it is a great place to 'unwind', adding: "Our beautiful naturist club is one of the nicest places to exercise, unwind and enjoy being naked in nature.

"Whether you want to swim naked every morning or simply enjoy getting an all-over tan during a summer weekend, our club is there for all our members to enjoy.

"The fun doesn't stop when winter comes - our pool is kept at 28C all year and is well used whatever the British weather brings.

"Skinny-dipping in our 50ft swimming pool is reason enough to join the club, but other sports include tennis on our two full-size tennis courts and we have indoor and outdoor table tennis, an exercise room, a badminton court, a basketball hoop, a volleyball area and a picturesque and very popular Boules court."

The club even has a 'fully-stocked' bar, TV room and conservatory and regularly hosts gigs, poetry readings, concerts, dinner parties and sports days.

A spokesman for Tandridge District Council said the plans had been submitted and that there were 'no concerns' about the flats overlooking the nudist club.

Nigel Hartley, a planning agent acting for the developers Comer Homes, said that a previous proposal to build on the site was rejected by planning chiefs, but that that the tower block had been given the nod by a planning appeals inspector.

He said: "The previous appeal was only rejected on design grounds.

"As a result the revised plan has been modified to accommodate this.

"The appeal inspector did not find there was any problem of overlooking (the naturist club)."

Volare e navigare nudi non è poi così difficile

Realmente si può volare e navigare nudi? Sembra proprio di si e anche da parecchio. Il primo volo per nudisti in aereo dovrebbe risalire al maggio del 2003. Nonostante il rifiuto Federal Aviation Administration i passeggeri, vestiti fino al momento di arrivare in alta quota, possono continuare nudi il loro viaggio. Il personale escluso ovviamente, per motivi di sicurezza.

I passeggeri hanno pagato 499 dollari per un viaggio che li ha portati da Miami a Cancun, in Messico. Tutti ricevono un asciugamano ricordo dell'esperienza. Ovviamente lo usano per coprire i sedili. Un particolare: per non far danni involontari, non sono state servite bevande bollenti.

Un'altra tendenza diffusa, inoltre, ormai da diversi anni sono le crociere per nudisti, (come le crociere della Carnival Cruise Lines), dove anche gli equipaggi non indossano uniformi.
